...and the snow made me lazy, so I did not go out to watch the second-most-important game of the Missouri Tigers' improbable football season...which they lost miserably...
But there was something good about the snow. It was a record of all the random people walking around in our alley and back yard. I love looking at the footprints after it snows. Before this project started, there would always be one set walking down to our basement backdoor. Perhaps checking its structural integrity or to see if it was unlocked. Maybe a homeless person just getting out of the wind. Or a random inquisitive person wondering what Jo-Elle and I are all about...
Yesterday's footprints showed that there were plenty of folks wandering the alley, which is not unusual. One set followed our brand-new concrete walkway the 10-or-so feet to the addition and fence closing off the way to the new basement door. The shadowy walker was rebuffed by the untreated wood picket and elevated patio. When the project is done, a new fence and gate will prevent random (ill-intentioned or not) folks from getting onto our lot from the alley---but in the meantime, I was pleased to see that yesterday's snowy feet found no easy entry and instead walked to the house next door where the prints imply they looked at the porch and moved on.
Normally, this would all be very alarming---except that I love, love, love to walk around after it snows. I do it every chance I get. And though global warming seems to be limiting my opportunities, I have always noticed the same sort of footprints everywhere I have lived in Chicago. Lake View. Logan Square. Buena Park. It seems there are folks walking around where they should not and when they should not be at every point and neighborhood in the city. Who knows what their intentions are...
Watch your back...
And lock your basement door...
