Floor as Roof. Roof as Floor.

Jeremy and his crew were busy this week. The basement addition has some brand-spanking newly hung ceilingjoists. He used those fresh new composite wood i-beams I've been seeing in This Old House and the magazines... And there are now subfloors in the old kitchen space as well as the addition (afterall, the basement addition is just the foundation for the added kitchen space, so those are really floor joists). There's drain holes for the patio too.

That new subfloor has cut off our access to the basement, so laundry is being done in remote locations for a while. We are ready to cut the hole for the new steps to the basement in the front of the house---but there is no room! The basement is jam-packed with all the old cabinets from the kitchen. We will be giving them to Habitat for Humanity for use in another house. A great deal---we get a little tax deduction, the materials stay out of the landfill, and someone else gets from cabinets. We are all winners, right? Well, except that we've been waiting for 6 weeks or so for the pick up---and will be waiting for two more. Oh well...Jason tells me this is SOP for Habitat and I cannot really complain too much as they'd just be stuck sitting on them too.

Next week we will be busy with some additional masonry---enlarging the hole which was cut in the wrong place, and a bit of tuck pointing. And then the walls start going up!
