Where did the floor go?

Jeremy left me a breathless message to be careful coming in tonight. Much appreciated. Now that the subfloor has been removed, the first step into what used to be my kitchen is a doozie! He could not bar the door---but the screwdriver jammed into the gap definitely would have served as a warning that something was afoot (or maybe not?) had I not gotten the message.
