Wonder no more.
To the left is our newly installed starfire glass wall. Crystal clear. So clear you can see Gambel's eye shine in this photo taken from outside the house (just above that dark thing on the deck) as she looks at me bewilderedly wondering why she can see through the wall.
It is constructed from two ply hurricane gas with an insulating noble gas core, hardened enough to withstand a 2X4 shot from an air cannon at typhoon speeds (though it won't look very clear after that...). The glass will allow sunlight to bath and warm Kitchenistan, limiting the need for much electric light during the day. Plus, we will be putting in a motorized shade that will allow privacy and a cool respite from the summer sun.
Enjoy the view while you can. We will be covering the glass tomorrow to protect it from dust as we will be on day two of floor installation. The floor guys are moaning about how hard it is to put in the ipe (must use glue and screw it down), but they should be psyched that we are using modified decking. Each board is 5.5 inches wide instead of a standard 1.5 or 2" board. I think it is going to look swank---but it is hard to tell today. The flooring went into the bathroom and 60% of the kitchen space---but there is a ton of filler slathered onto it so it looks a little sloppy. Tomorrow they will finish installation and then sand it down. Then we will see how the wood looks, and if we need to stain it (I think we will darken the wood a tad so that there is more of a contrast with the cabinet doors).
