The Job Site as Facebook...

With all the activity this week, there were more than a dozen guys working on our house. One of the most fascinating things to watch was the way these guys work each other for other jobs. It's like a singles bar where everyone is there for a professional pickup. The structural guy swapped cards with the architect. Jeremy put out feelers for a stucco guy. The concrete guys scouted the masons... It was a bit like Jewish geography---everyone knows someone who worked with someone else on a job. Three degrees of trade separation... It felt a lot like they are all trying to accumulate friends on a Myspace page or something---but I guess word of mouth is how you get the jobs. Still, the idea of all these guys posting their bios to woo one another...professionally speaking, of course...cracks me up.
