New York is always fun, but reminds me how great Chicago is: alleys and architecture. Admittedly, my last two trips have only covered a swath of Manhattan, but I am continually struck by how lame the buildings are... Sure, you practically trip over some of the most fantastic buildings of the 20th century in the Flat Iron building, the Empire State Building, the Gugenheim, and the Chrysler Building... But what is cool in the last 40 years? The twin towers are gone...what is left are a jumble of random towers that don't fit together as well as the muscular skyline that is the loop.
As for alleys...well, mounds of garbage on the street every night is just plain nasty. It seems grosser in Philly, but alleys are indeed a wonderful thing.
Call me provincial...
