Going Down?

We have not had basement access from inside the house for some time now. When I need to get into the basement, I literally walk around the block and into the alley. This gets in the way of stuff like laundry to the point that Jo-Elle drives it over to a friend's house.

But that is about to change. The new staircase opening has been gouged. The stupid old staircase that took up 1/3 of the stupid old kitchen was part of the impetus for this whole project. The new staircase to the basement will sit below the staircase to the second floor. It used to be a closet, now it is a gaping hole. Five joists had to be shortened, it will force some HVAC work, and the stairs are likely to be kinda awkward---but this is a vast and happy improvement over what was there.

Update: Well, this did not post last night as I thought it would...and that photo is oddly sideways... I'll rectify that stuff later. In the meantime, Jeremy is literally pounding the stairs into place as I type. Basement access is nearly in my grasp!
