It takes green to be green...

A decision on millwork looms.

If you've never done kitchen stuff, you will be shocked to find out what cabinetry costs these days. Five figures no matter what for our space. And that is without the hardware (which at these prices should be platinum or something---at least copper since that is what everyone seems to be stealing these days...). But no, that's just for wood boxes with pretty doors. So, we have a big "dollars and cents vs. design sense" decision to make and it comes down to how much it costs to be green. We are really, really, really trying to be environmentally responsible on this addition---but they don't make it easy.

Right now, we can get nice, regular wood semi-custom cabinets trucked up here from a factory in North Carolina, complete with all the offgassing toxins that we are supposed to be scared of...

OR we can get locally-produced cabinet boxes made from post-consumer waste (like wheat board, but something else...the name escapes me) with nice veneer doors (and no carbon footprint). Even negotiating a $10,000 discount (no joke!) the green cabinets cost TWICE the real wood ones. What is a poor wanna-be environmentalist to do?

BTW, the photo gives you a sense of what our kitchen looks like now that the demo is largely done.
